United States: The threat of measles disease is increasing in the United States, with every increasing case. Recently, the case tally has reached up to 41 cases across 16 states of the US.

The data has been shared by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its weekly publication. The official stats have mentioned that earlier, as of February 22, the number of disease-linked cases was 35 in 15 states.

The federal health agency has mentioned that Michigan was the newest added state to the tally maintained by the CDC.

Steepest upsurge in measles-linked cases!

In recent history, the upsurge in cases has been the steepest, according to data from health agencies. After dealing with such a surge of cases at the beginning of 2024, health experts worry that the country might face a massive surge similar to 2019, according to CBS News.

How do experts address the recent uptick?

The head of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases of the CDC – Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, during a panel meeting with the advisors of the agency, said, “That is not a good slope of the curve, in terms of where we’re going with measles.”

He further highlighted that the disease is preventable with the help of vaccines. Daskalasis additionally asked the local communities of the United States to receive vaccination against the disease.

Health officials have mentioned that the concerns related to the infection have been increasing across the United States after a decline in the vaccination rate.

The spokesperson for the CDC mentioned, “We are a global community. As measles continues to increase in other parts of the world, these importations continue to happen. And when they land places where coverage is low, we are at risk for ongoing larger outbreaks,” the reports by CBS revealed.

Following this, the infection was detected in New Jersey – where the case was found in a resident of a county neighboring Philadelphia. However, the health officials outlined that there was no direct link between the latest exposure and the outbreak in Philadelphia.

The third small outbreak was found in Clay County of Missouri State, where a measles case was found in a resident on January 12. According to the health authorities, the resident had a travel history, and he reported through Kansas City International Airport.

After Missouri’s Clay County, Virginia, and Maryland reported a measles case each, it is to be noted that the case was found among the people who traveled through Dulles International Airport.

The states were followed by Georgia, where a resident contracted measles on January 18 after traveling to the Middle East. An additional case was later confirmed in the state, as per the health authorities, and the case was linked to an unvaccinated individual.
