United States: The New York State has now reported spread of deadly and drug-resistant superbug. The re-emergence has raised concerns among the health authorities of the state as the superbug can kill around 60 percent of the infected individuals.

The health experts have outlined that across the United States, the majority of the cases have been found in New York.

Cases of deadly fungal infection are still surging in various parts of New York

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has regarded Candida auris (C auris) as an “urgent threat.” The health experts have expressed worry after witnessing the spread of deadly superbug.

While addressing the concern, the CDC stated, “It is often resistant to multiple antifungal drugs, spreads easily in healthcare facilities, and can cause severe infections with high death rates,” as per Hudson Valley Post.

The superbug fatality rate across the state is approximately 60 percent, according to the reports published by the New York Post.

Further, while emphasizing the matter, the health agency mentioned, “Equally concerning was a tripling in 2021 of the number of cases that were resistant to echinocandins, the antifungal medicine most recommended for treatment of C. auris infections,” and further added, “In general, C. auris is not a threat to healthy people. People who are very sick, have invasive medical devices, or have long or frequent stays in healthcare facilities are at increased risk for acquiring C. auris.”

New York ranks among top three most affected superbug-hit US states

According to the recently shared data by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are as many as 326 cases of C auris. The reports have further revealed that New York ranks below Nevada and California – which have reported more confirmed cases of Candida auris.

While emphasizing the severity of the disease, an epidemiologist of the CDC – Dr Meghan Lyman, stated, “The rapid rise and geographic spread of cases is concerning and emphasizes the need for continued surveillance, expanded lab capacity, quicker diagnostic tests, and adherence to proven infection prevention and control,” according to Hudson Valley Post.

As per the details shared by the health officials, cases related to C. auris have been increasing for several reasons, such as poor general infection prevention, control practices in healthcare facilities, and better efforts to detect cases.

Candida auris and its symptoms

The New York State of Health has emphasized that the perfect setting for the spread of Candida auris is through contact with contaminated surfaces or equipment, along with direct physical contact with the infected person.

An infected person shows signs and symptoms like swallowing and a burning sensation.
